Real PM and Women in Construction Week 2024

The team attended Women Into Construction’s Webinar on Inclusion – Accelerate Progress for International Women’s Day

For 2024’s Women in Construction Week, several of our team attended Women into Construction CIC’s International Women’s Day webinar.

The theme this year was Invest in Inclusion – Accelerate Progress and it was inspiring to hear from their incredible speakers. We know there is still a long way to go and this was a great opportunity to be a part of a wider conversation and hear directly what we can do to accelerate progress

Here were our main takeaways:

Women have a higher risk of injury due to poorly fitting equipment and lack of adequate facilities
A male-dominated culture remains the #1 reason for leaving the sector
Women are 3x more likely to miss out on promotion and often report that there is a lack of mentoring and networking opportunities due to a scarcity of women in senior positions
Women represent just 16% of the construction workforce in Britain, with less than 2% in manual trades
Construction in the UK is forecasted to require an additional 225,000 workers by 2027
Transition to Net Zero in the UK offers new job roles which are going to require new skills

So, what does this all mean? It means that we have an opportunity to change. The industry is growing, and we need more workers for the future of our industry. Women are looking to be that future, but time and time again they are finding that the door is being closed to them and for the few that do manage to push through, the environment isn’t being properly created with them in mind. As an industry we can change this, with actions as simple as ordering the correct PPE, and reviewing recruitment practices and viewpoints on experience, we can make the first step to changing this narrative.


At Real PM we are dedicated to creating a work environment that is suitable and encouraging to all. As Project Managers and Planners, we can and pledge to influence the job sites of our projects to foster the same dedication to inclusivity.
